About Me

Susana Mouga graduated in Developmental Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCEUC) in 2007. For her MSc degree, she investigated the intellectual profile of children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the Neurodevelopment and Autism Unit (UNDA), Paediatric Hospital, Coimbra Local Health Unit. She completed her PhD in Health Sciences - Biomedical Sciences in 2021, in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) while holder of a PhD grant from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, FCT (SFRH/BD/102779/2014). During her PhD, she was particularly interested in the clinical characterisation of children and adolescents with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders and the application technologies such as eye-tracking, virtual reality and neuroimaging techniques (brain functional magnetic resonance imaging - fMRI), and ecological tasks in the study of executive functions and social cognition in ASD. During the past seventeen years, she has been collaborating on National and European research projects at University of Coimbra (UC), in the area of neurodevelopmental disorders, namely, autism spectrum disorder, always combining basic research and clinical work. She is currently an Assistant Professor at FPCEUC, where she coordinates the Master’s in Special Education and Inclusive Society (MEESI). She lectures Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Intervention Programs in Special and Inclusive Education (MEESI); plus Neuropsychological Assessment: Children and Adolescents and Stimulation and Rehabilitation (Master in Clinical Neuropsychology: Assessment and Rehabilitation). Susana is also an integrated member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20) and a collaborating researcher ate the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT), where until August 2025 she did her research in both basic and translational neuroscience in ASD. Her achievements are reflected in 33 original peer-reviewed papers published in high-quality international journals, 7 as first author, 1 conference paper, 30 conference proceedings, with a total of 2126 citations, with a continuous increase of citations every year and an H-index of 17 by Scopus. She had also the opportunity to disseminate her research findings as author and co-author of 76 scientific posters and 42 oral communications at national and renowned international conferences: International Society for Autism Research (INSAR), European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD), among others. She is an invited reviewer for 7 different multidisciplinary journals, such as the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Scientific Reports, and Frontiers in Psychiatry. Importantly, she has been involved in the organization of science outreach activities, such as giving talks at public engagement actions at schools and patient associations, Brain Awareness Week and organization of courses. She has received 9 awards, including the Stimulus for Individual Scientific Employment (CEEC) Grant (Reference: 2022.00474.CEECIND) and the 1st Prize for Oral Communication in the VII Seminar of Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics Society. Since 2021, she has been an invited lecturer in MSc in Molecular and Translational Neuroscience at FMUC. She currently co-supervises two PhD and two MSc students in Educational Sciences, one PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and has supervised three MSc theses in Clinical Neuropsychology. Additionally, she has supervised three professional one-year internships for qualification in the Order of Portuguese Psychologists. Her supervision experience extends to eight curricular internships for MSc students in Clinical Neuropsychology at FPCEUC, ISPA and Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Her research interests are Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Child Development and Mental Health, Special Education, Neuropsychology, Clinical and Cognitive neuroscience.
