CIBIT (Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research) is a leading institution in multimodal imaging and translational research which received an evaluation of EXCELLENT in the International panel evaluation of 2019.

We combine approaches from medicine, physiology and engineering, support by a network of national and international collaborations Particular strengths include MR, OCT, PET, Physiological approaches and molecular probe production and molecular imaging in Neuroscience, Cardiology and Oncology (given cyclotron and radiopharmacy facilities). We form an axis of national leadership in medical imaging, and represent the key infrastructure in the National Roadmap. CIBIT is based at ICNAS, University of Coimbra which hosts the infrastructure of the National Brain Imaging Network.

Our Unit features a fully translational biomedical research effort, from design of new molecular probes to human imaging of structure, chemistry and function. We represent the Medical Imaging Branch of EU funded EuroBioimaging Network. Our mission includes basic, translational research and development and exploitation of new imaging Technologies driving development of and access to state-of-the-art imaging instrumentation. Our activities cover all workpackages of Eurobioimaging, from translational research using Molecular and Functional Imaging techniques to clinical trials. The level of multimodal translational approaches is also supported by international collaborations (Karolinska Institute, Kings College, Max-Plank Institute, McGill University) and industry partnerships (Siemens, IBA). CIBIT also has strong expertise in medical device validation, neurostimulation and human-machine interfaces.
