About Me

Scientific and Professional Profile and Career He graduated in Materials Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (FCT/UNL) in 1992, obtained a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the same institution in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2007. In 2020, he completed the Habilitation Exam in Industrial Engineering at the University of Aveiro. From 1995 to 1998, he developed his professional career at SOREFAME/ADTRANZ Portugal, a metalworking company specialized in railway equipment, where he held management roles in logistics and quality management. He began his academic career at FCT/UNL in 1998 as an Assistant and, in 2007, became Assistant Professor. Since 2008, he has been with the Polytechnic University of Lisbon – ISEL, where he is currently Associate Professor with habilitation. He has also served as Invited Professor at other institutions, including the School of Business Administration (ESCE – Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, 2010–2019) and, since 2021, the Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Internal Security (ISCPSI). Contributions to Science Over the past 15 years, his research has combined fundamental studies on models and principles with applied research aimed at developing methods and tools that foster value creation and continuous improvement in industry, services, and distributed systems. He has participated in several national and European research projects, is a member of scientific committees in more than 150 conferences, and frequently reviews manuscripts for leading international journals. His scientific output includes over 150 publications—books, journal articles, and conference papers—covering areas such as logistics, quality, maintenance, open innovation, risk management, project management, and lean management. He is actively involved in international research networks as: • Reviewer of research proposals for the Dutch Research Council (NOW). • Member of the IFAC Technical Committee TC 5.3 (Enterprise Integration & Networking). • Co-founder of SOCOLNET (Society of Collaborative Networks), where he also serves on the treasury audit board. • Member of IFIP TC 5 (Information Technology Applications), WG 5.5 (Cooperation Infrastructure for Virtual Enterprises and e-Business – COVE) Contributions to Society Beyond research and teaching, he contributes to the broader valorisation of knowledge through: • Technical committees: Former member of Portuguese Technical Committee nº 180 (Risk Management) and long-standing member of Technical Committee nº 175 (Project, Programme, and Portfolio Management). He is also a member of the Lisbon Geographical Society (Transport Section), the Portuguese Association of Engineers, and a founding member of the Engineering and Industrial Management Committee. He currently serves on the Evaluation and Qualification Council of the Portuguese Association of Engineers. • Academic and educational evaluation: Member of external assessment bodies, including the Portuguese Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES), EUR-ACE quality certification panels, and the Inspectorate-General of Education and Science (IGEC). • Other activities - Since 2019, he has been part of the Logistics Excellence Award (PEL) competition panel. The winning candidate from this competition will represent Portugal at the European Logistics Association's (ELA) ‘ELA Award’ for Project of the Year, one of the most prestigious logistics awards given to companies in Europe. He is a qualified trainer at INA, I.P., a public institute whose mission is to create, transmit and disseminate knowledge in the field of Portuguese public administration. Furthermore, he is a founding member of a student chapter at ISEL under the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM). Currently, he serves as a Faculty Advisor and was honoured with an award from IEOM in 2023.
