About Me

Stanimir Valtchev is an Emeritus Professor of Universidade NOVA of Lisbon, Portugal. He had a multifaceted professional route. Born in Lovetch, Bulgaria in 1951, he constructed several radios (first on vacuum tubes and since 1962 also on transistors) and was a radio amateur, member of the City Radio club of Sofia since 1963. During the studies he was a speaker at university research seminars and even received a partial salary as a researcher in semiconductor technology since 1973. In 1974 the Technical University of Sofia (TUS), awarded him with a wrist watch engraved by his name as the best graduate in Semiconductor Technology and offered directly the entrance to the PhD studies. Instead, for some time he serviced military radars and (later) got an air force captain rank. In those times of compulsory appointments his university success gave him the chance to choose his employer. The Institute of Medical Equipment was his first choice and it lasted for some years. There he was leading a group, constructing electronic equipment, using cardio signals for training purpose and treating deeply the human body tissue by high frequency crossed electromagnetic fields. In the end of 1977 he returned to the TUS, joining the Industrial Electronics group. In 1978-79 he constructed several highly stabilized high power laser supplies for medical chirurgic equipment prepared for Riazan laser consortium production. In 1980-1987 he worked as a researcher of different grades in the Laboratory for Robots of TUS being elected also Assistant Director of the Centre of Robotics (later transformed in the Faculty of Robotics). There he constructed uninterruptible power supplies, energy supply for geologist signal acquisition equipment, motor control for capacitor-winding machines, highway-tyre cohesion measuring car for the traffic police institute, rowing team force measuring set for the sports scientific institute of CSKA. During 1987 and 1991-1992 he worked in the Power Electronics Laboratory of TU Delft, as Assistant Professor. Since 1988 he was also Assistant Professor in TUS teaching courses on Power Supply and Power Converters. Elected Deputy Dean of TUS he was responsible for all the international students of TUS (1990-1994). Working on high-frequency resonant power converters published in numerous conferences and journals (started to publish in journals in 1978, participated actively in PEMC´90 Budapest, IEEE Meritorious Paper Award, 1997, Best Paper Award from PEMC2014). In 1994 he was invited to Portugal to lead a project. He finished the project at a high scientific level, originating many promotions of students and colleagues in IST-the Technical university of Lisbon. He continued in Portugal, teaching various subjects in different universities and consulting various institutions in Portugal and in the Netherlands (also military). Based on a versatile experience, his research includes energy conversion at highest and lowest power level, motor drives including the multilevel operation, natural and human energy harvesting, wireless energy transfer, electric vehicles, energy management and storage, photovoltaic MPPC, some radar technology, tunnelling FET devices and biosensors. He is consultant of the European Polytechnic University in Bulgaria, invited full professor of BFU-Bulgaria, also invited professor in TU Sofia-Bulgaria, consultant of Lipetsk Technical University-Russian Federation, journal editor, assessor of Portuguese industry and of international (EU) projects, fluent in English, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, and Bulgarian with some knowledge in other languages, he held seminars in IST-Lisbon 1992, TU-Delft 2008, KAIST-Daejeon 2010, City University-Tokyo 2010, etc. He served on INTELEC 2011 Organizing Committee as a responsible for the technical program, in many other conferences was in Program and Scientific Committees, reviewer of many IEEE Transactions. Recently (2013) he was elected in the PEMC International Council and served as the General Chair of the International (A+) IEEE Conference: Power Electronics and Motion Control (IEEE-PEMC2016), the oldest of Europe in its scientific area. He is a chair of a subcommittee of IES of IEEE, editor of many journals and member of organizing committees of many conferences.
