About Me
Helena Catarina Pereira graduated in Biomedical Engineering in 2007 and obtained her PhD in Physics in 2014, both from the University of Coimbra. Between 2006 and 2015, she conducted research at the Department of Physics, University of Coimbra, focusing on developing biomedical devices for monitoring cardiovascular conditions and diabetic foot. During this period, she actively participated in teaching and supervising graduate students in Biomedical Engineering. In 2007, she joined ISA - Intelligent Sensing Anywhere SA, where she held various responsibilities over a five-year period. Her role involved leading health research projects centred around the remote control of vital signs and assisted living environments. From 2015 to 2016, H. Catarina Pereira served as a consultant at SPI-Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação, contributing to multiple projects related to research and development, innovation, internationalisation, and commercial strategy development. She also played a key role in preparing and monitoring applications for national and EU funding systems. In 2016, she became a postdoctoral researcher at IBILI – Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences, followed by a post-doctoral position at ICNAS - Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health in 2017. During this time, she participated in several European research projects designed to validate novel therapeutic approaches in neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Throughout her postdoctoral studies, she engaged in five multicentre clinical trials, coordinating four of them. This expanded her expertise in neuroimaging (MRI, EEG) and neuromodulation (tDCS, BCI) techniques, cognitive neuroscience, as well as clinical trial management, regulatory compliance, and patient recruitment. From 2023 to 2025, she was a researcher at ICNAS PHARMA – University of Coimbra, where she investigated neuroadaptation following cataract and refractive surgery, aiming to identify therapeutic targets and intraocular lens features that support effective neuroadaptation for clinical application. She was also involved in a multicentre clinical trial focused on validating personalised at-home neurofeedback interventions for children with ASD. Currently, she is an integrated reseacher at the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT) and a senior technician at the University of Coimbra. She is conducting a feasibility study using a BCI device that incorporates educational games for individuals with ASD. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop a portable and user-friendly device that can be used in different settings to help autistic people improve their social and emotional cognition. H. Catarina Pereira holds an invention patent and is the author or co-author of 20 original peer-reviewed papers published in high-impact international journals, 8 book chapters, and 30 conference papers. She has also presented her research through 10 scientific posters and 13 oral communications at national and international conferences. In addition, she has actively contributed to science outreach initiatives, including hands-on science activities in school clubs and participation in European Researchers' Night events. Her work has been recognised with several awards, including the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge Award 2016 (Best Idea in the PhD category), three Best Student Paper Awards, one Best Poster Prize at international conferences, and three educational grants.
