About Me
Professor Antonio C. M. Sousa received his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal-Fluids) from the Victoria University of Manchester (UMIST), England, UK, in 1976. After a short stay with University of Minho, Portugal, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Brasília, Brazil, first as Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies and later on as Acting Chair. Late in 1977, he moved as Senior Engineer and Head of the Thermal-Fluids Division of the Fuel Department of the Brazil Nuclear Companies, SA, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was involved in the First Fuel Reload Project of Angra I Westinghouse 600 MWe PWR. After the project was successfully completed in 1980, he took an Associate Professorship with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada; in 1985 he was promoted to Full Professor. During his tenure at UNB he held several positions, among them Chair of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Engineering, elected member of the University Senate and member of the Graduate School Council. He was Visiting Professor at Technical University of Lisbon, University of Bologna, University of Salerno, University of Naples, University of Trieste and University of Ljubljana during his sabbatical leaves. In 1994, he took a 3-year leave of absence from UNB to become Professor and Director-Coordinator of the Centre for Extension Studies, University of Macau, and Director ( Board of Directors) of the Centre for Productivity and Technology Transfer of Macau – position that he kept until 1999. In 2000, he became a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Aveiro, Portugal and he was Director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering over the period March 2011 to May 2015. In 2012 he was made a Professor Emeritus of University of New Brunswick. His main research interests deal with the development of experimental and computational tools capable of capturing multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena including material thermal characterization, polymeric composite processing and multiphase flows with heat transfer. He is Associate Editor for the International Journal of Fluid Dynamics (09/2004–on) and Journal of Achievements in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (12/2005-on) and, he served as Associate Editor of Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion (12/2004–12/2009) and Proceedings A of Royal Society (1/2007-12/2013). He is also Member of the Editorial Board, Advances in Heat Transfer Series, Computational Mechanics Publications, England (09/1994-on). He has served in a professional capacity in a variety of assignments, namely: AGARD-NATO Consultant (University of Coimbra, 1995 and 1996); Member, Evaluation Commission for the Mechanical Engineering Programs at Portuguese Universities, Lisbon, Portugal (06/1997-06/1998; 06/2000-07/2001); Technology Transfer Adviser, European Union - Macau Business Development Program, Management, Planning & Research GmbH, Germany (10/1997 - 09/ 1998); Member, Advisory Board, ADAI (Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics), Coimbra, Portugal (06/1999 – 05/2007); Member, Multidisciplinary Committee of the “Commission for the Parliamentary Inquiry to the Tragedy of Camarate”, Lisbon, Portugal (05/2003–12/2004); Member, Selection Discovery Grant Committee (SGC-13), Mechanical Engineering, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (08/2004–03/ 2007). He is an Honorary Member of the Unione Italiana Termofluidodinamica (Italian Society of Thermo-fluid Dynamics) “for outstanding research contributions to the Heat Transfer field” (1992 - on), and a Fellow (1997-on) and an Energy Expert (1991-on) of the Portuguese Order of Engineers. He has chaired or served in the advisory boards of more than 40 international conferences. Also, he has been invited as a keynote speaker in numerous scientific events, and he delivered a keynote lecture at the 13th International Heat Transfer Conference, Sidney, Australia (08/2006). He has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific papers published either in refereed journals or in conference proceedings, and 47 miscellaneous publications dealing primarily with education and economic competitiveness issues.
