CISTER (Research Centre in Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems) is a Research Unit hosted at the School of Engineering (ISEP) of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (P.Porto) as the main management institution, and at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) as the secondary management institution. CISTER was, in 2004, 2007 and 2017, awarded the classification of Excellent in FCT evaluations.

Since its inception, CISTER has grown to become one of the leading European research units in the areas of embedded, real-time, and cyber-physical systems, including critical computing systems, contributing with seminal research works in a number of subjects, namely: real-time communication networks and protocols; wireless sensor networks (WSN); cyber-physical systems (CPS); real-time programming paradigms and operating systems; distributed embedded systems; cooperative computing and QoS-aware applications; scheduling and schedulability analysis (including multiprocessor systems).

CISTER has a strong and solid international reputation, built upon a robust track record of publications, a continuous presence on program and organising committees of international top conferences, and the participation in several dozens of R&D projects, at the national and international levels, addressing both fundamental research activities and industry-driven initiatives. CISTER is also one of the founding members of Vortex, a CoLab focused on safety and cybersecurity, and the main sponsor of the new MSc on Critical Computing Systems, offered by the Department of Software Engineering of ISEP.
