About Me

Ricardo Martins (RM) earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2017 from the University of Coimbra (UC), specializing in automation and robotics. He also holds a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from UC, awarded in 2008. RM is affiliated as integrated member with the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT-UC). His research in recent years has been centred on two distinct areas: cognitive robotics and neuroimaging in cognitive neuroscience. These fields converge in his primary research interests, which encompass probability and statistics, multivariate signal/image processing, computational modelling, and machine intelligence. During his doctoral studies at the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-UC), RM's research focused on the development of artificial perception and Bayesian computational models for decision-making. This research was applied to projects focused on autonomous robotic haptic exploration and dexterous manipulation tasks. Since 2017, RM has served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health (ICNAS-UC). Initially, he held a postdoctoral fellowship and, starting in 2019, continued his research under a temporary six-year (3+1+1+1) contract (2019-2025) funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During this timeframe, he expanded his doctoral specialization through advanced training, participating in national and international flagship courses in biostatistics, computational methods, and tools for studying multimodal neuroimaging data, including structural MRI (sMRI), functional MRI (fMRI), and dynamic PET tracer kinetic modelling. RM has effectively applied his doctoral and postdoctoral competencies and experience as a member of research teams engaged in both national and international (EU) funded projects. These projects span a diverse range of areas, including computational modelling and pattern recognition (FP7-HANDLE), computer-aided diagnosis tools (FP7-EPILEPSIAE), neuroscience of visual perception (FCT-NeuroHyst), and multimodal neuroimaging biomarkers research, as well as the validation of new therapies in neurological and psychiatric disorders (H2020-AIMS-2-TRIALS, H2020-MarieCurie-ITNNANOSTEM, H2020-STIPED, FLAD-BS2C). RM has been appointed by UC to mentor both master's and doctoral students through short-duration research training programs on these topics. Presently, RM serves as the co-supervisor for a doctoral student in Biomedical Engineering and a master's student in Medical Physics. RM's research outcomes have been published in international journals and conferences covering various fields, including cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, biomarker research, robotics, automation, and machine intelligence. Some of his contributions have been incorporated into works distinguished with two national clinical research awards. Additionally, he has been invited to serve as a jury member for academic degrees in the field of Biomedical Engineering and to review articles for various international journals and IEEE/ACM conferences focusing on these research topics. As a hobbyist, RM actively contributes to international citizen science projects, specifically iNaturalist and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), showcasing over six hundred open-data research-grade observations.
