About Me
João Filipe da Costa Martins obtained his PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2015 at the University of Coimbra; he has been working in Neurosciences, mainly in Vision Sciences. He has published more than 30 journal articles mostly in first quartile in Neurosciences and Ophthalmology, with a record of more than 750 citations and h-index of 14. João has developed his research studies mainly at the University of Coimbra, Portugal; the Vision Institute, Paris, France; the University of Copenhagen, Denmark; and the University Nova of Lisbon, Portugal. He has been involved in more than 20 research projects and has been supervising PhD, MSc, and BSc students of Biology, Biochemistry, and Biomedical Engineering background. He was recently awarded with a Seed Project at Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research, University of Coimbra, as Principal Investigator, to study neuroplasticity mechanisms in animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders. Other activities include reviewer of scientific journals in Vision Science field, jury of BSc and MSc degrees, and speaker on Brain Awareness Week dissemination events such as laboratory and school visits. João's current research interest is to understand basic brain physiology, especially the visual system from the retina to the visual cortex. A major goal is to unravel how neurodevelopmental disorders affect cortical plasticity. Brain stimulation and pharmacotherapies are studied as possible means of ameliorating cognitive deficits. His research skills include several techniques from fundamental cellular and molecular biology and microscopy to rodent behavioral tests, in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology, optical coherence tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and stimulus programming.
